How To Determine Your Skin Type

One of the reasons why your current skincare products may not be working for you is that they may not be designed for your skin type. Here’s how to determine what your skin type is and why it is important to know.

What Are The Four Skin Types?

If you have yet to determine your skin type, then you may not be using the correct skincare products. Your skin type develops around puberty and remains the same at least until menopause. There are 4 primary skin types:

  • Normal
  • Oily
  • Dry
  • Combination

In addition to your skin type, you may have a skin condition such as sensitive skin, acne, rosacea, or hyperpigmentation. If you have a skin condition, you will need to select products designed for both your skin type and skin condition. When speaking of the Methode Bridgette Kettner collections, this often means selecting a full line and personalizing it with condition-specific products.

How To Determine Your Skin Type?

Your dermatologist or aesthetician can assess your skin and tell you what your skin type is, or you can determine what it is at home with a blot test.

Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, pat it dry and allow it to sit for 30 minutes without applying serum or moisturizer. Then take a few blotting sheets or single layers of tissue and pat them against different areas of your face—the forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin. Then hold the tissue up to the light.

  • If you have light oil on all areas of your face, you likely have normal skin.
  • If you have excessive oil everywhere, you likely have oily skin.
  • If you only have oil on your forehead, nose, and chin you likely have combination skin.
  • If you have little to no oil, you likely have dry skin.

Once the test is complete, restore moisture to your skin by applying your usual toner, serum, and moisturizer.

What About Anti-Aging?

The final factor to consider when selecting your skincare products is whether your skin is starting to show visible signs of aging. The MBK team believes that beauty comes from within, but we also understand that you want to feel as vibrant and confident on the outside as you do on the inside. Below are some general guidelines for selecting anti-aging skincare products:

  • Unless premature aging has begun, in your 20s and 30s select naturally derived products designed to take a proactive approach.
  • By your 40s your products should be both proactive and reactive as fine lines and early wrinkles begin to form.
  • At 50 and beyond you want products that also work to reverse and rejuvenate your skin.

How To Personalize Your Skincare Routine?

We suggest starting with the MBK Skincare Line that is designed for your skin’s age, then swapping out products in the line for alternatives that address your skin type and skin conditions. A few examples include
