What Are Lip Treatments And Why Do You Need Them?

There’s a new generation of lip treatments that are 100% non-invasive and pain-free. This includes a growing range of topical products and skincare devices designed specifically for your lips. Your lips might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of anti-aging skincare, but they are an area that shows significant signs of aging. Here’s what you need to know to take a proactive or reactive approach as your lips begin to age.

Why Lips Age Faster?

The repetitive motion of smiling, laughing, talking, and facial expressions leads to laugh lines and other fine lines and deep creases around the mouth. The more you express yourself, the faster your lips (and face) will age. The area around your eyes will age the fastest, typically followed by the skin around your lips.

The skin on the lips is approximately 4 times thinner and more delicate than the skin on your face. As natural collagen production slows, your lips (and skin) continue to thin. This means your lips are more susceptible to UV damage, wind, toxins, and other aging factors. Even more susceptible than the rest of your face.

What Are Lip Treatments?

Lip treatments are any product range, skincare device, or anti-aging treatment designed to treat the skin on or around the lips. This includes injectable products but also an impressive and growing range of day-to-day lip care products.

While products to prevent or address chapped lips are nothing new, the addition of anti-aging ingredients is new.

This includes lip products that contain:

  • UV protection
  • Anti-aging antioxidants
  • Moisturizer
  • And more!

This might be a balm that you can wear solo or layer before or after your lipstick. You can also find exfoliating masks, leave-on lip masks, and spa and at-home treatments that stimulate natural rejuvenation on and around the lips. Just don’t use a moisturizer designed for the face on your lips unless it’s clearly stated as lip-safe. Most facial serums are lip-safe.

You subconsciously lick your lips throughout the day which further dries them out. It also means that the product you apply to your lips must be both skin-safe and safe to ingest in small amounts.

How To Exfoliate Your Lips?

It’s ideal to exfoliate proactively, before your lips chap. You may be tempted to exfoliate when they are peeling, but wait a few days to rehydrate and moisturize, and always be gentle or you can cause painful cracks in your lips.

You can make a DIY lip scrub with the directions below:

  1. Combine 1 teaspoon of honey with 2 teaspoons of table sugar.
  2. Gently massage this mixture on your lips and leave it on for 10 minutes to hydrate.
  3. Rinse off with warm water and pat your lips dry.
  4. Apply an anti-aging and moisturizing lip balm.
  5. Repeat once per week.
